In most countries, public sector services are undergoing radical changes due to several challenges:
- States and public organizations face a tight financial situation and struggle to access new financial resources.
- Like other industries, the public sector views sustainable development as a strategic objective. Due to its visibility, it has to set an example.
- With increasing expectations from citizens and public service end-users, the public sector has to offer new, enriched services and forge new relationships with users.
So how can a better understanding of the business ecosystem and improved relationships with stakeholders help the service sector meet these challenges?
In essence, providing services to citizens is key for many public sector organizations. To fulfill its mission, it has to demonstrate its ability to understand its environment (user expectations) and deliver a high quality of service.
Given the evolution of the public sector’s role, it is critical for it to develop an ability to work in collaboration with other stakeholders:
- Together with other public sector organizations to maximize efficiency in public service (coordination between national and local levels, multi-state initiatives, etc.)
- Together with private stakeholders to capitalize on complementary knowledge and resources to successfully transform the public sector (PFI, outsourcing, etc.)
The public sector could also draw on its entire ecosystem to promote sustainable development.
